Deface Makes Violence Pretty!

Here are some prototypes from my new collection. Im using all natural fabrics so they can be biodegradable. My research for my masters thesis is in sustainability, which my professor thinks is a big joke. She only looks at my work for 'visual impact', and doesn't care at all how its made.

I have so many complaints about my school, but there are also great instructors, people and facilities that are incredible! I'm so eternally grateful that the government is paying my tuition. What a ride!

So in these photos you can see me using the leaves of the Japanese Biwa tree for dyeing and and GIANT, forty year old army parachute I bought from the base in Okinawa. The plant matter gives my fabric a soft, worn quality and with the parachute ( a symbol of attack, army, violence, for me ) I am making very feminine, voluminous, flowing garments that at first glance don't look like they were a parachute at all. But they smell like they have been locked in a chest for forty years ( haha)

We had at art show at Liquid Room! It was really short notice and we only had about a week to prepare, but I think we pulled it off. Mariel even sent some of her lovely sparkle joy from Canada!

We'll be doing again in Febuary, I think if all goes well.

This accesory set I made completely out of stolen train rides. In Tokyo, you buy a ticket to where you are going every time, and use the ticket to get into the system, then out again at the end. So if a person was broke for a while, they could buy the cheapest ticket and then run out of the gates. I never did that. I found all of these of they were given to me, I swear.

Another exhibition, friends! This time it will be at Liquid Room in Ebisu, and I'll be sharing the space with a few other friends. The lovely Mariel Gonzalez will be shipping in some work from far off Canada, Will Robinson with his larger-than-life oil paintings, Akinori Avuratani will be showing his beast collection, Emi with be gracing our walls with ephemeral beauties from the pages of magazines. Ayano chan will be hosting a sewing party in the middle of the floor and you can buy her beautiful one-of-a-kind creations right then and there! ( BTW look at her blog there is a link on the right-->) And I? I will be showing children's toys made from racist Japanese political posters, and accessories made from student poverty.

I'll be showing some of accesories with some friends in a group show in Shimokitazawa this month! Also showing will be two hat designers, a leather craftswoman, and a girl who makes stuffed animals. Its a two week show from the 18th of September to the 2nd of October, with a reception right in the middle in the 25th of Sept. Its being held in the lovely and cozy COMP cafe. The reception is 3,oooYen for all you and eat and drink yumminess. But, if you're busy that day drop me a line and we can go and check it out any time and have a coffe or Red Eye ( beer and tomato juice ! )

A very old Japanese textile company donated to our school some rolls of kimono or Yukata ( a summer kimono made of printed cotton ) fabric so that we could do this lovely exhibition. I chose one fabric that was unlike any kimono I had ever seen, a violent brown and black print with circles and lines. I created shoes and a belt using recycled zebra skin and metal.

I love that they made a little plaque with my face on it. Yes, I was the only non-Asian face in the room. I'm used to being the visible minority nowadays....

My otaku anime nerd neighbour moved out and left this sweet frame with a really creepy painting of a Japanese woman in it so I flipped it over and drew a woman with bangs. I swear to Jan Svankmayer that the smelly man had NEVER ONCE cleaned his apartment. Dust you could grab with your hands and play football with. Suffice it to say that he left a lot of weird anime as well.
